A travel insurance policy covers a range of risks that individuals face while they travel internationally or domestically. Read this article to find out whether medical risks are covered under travel insurance policies.

Does travel insurance cover illness

Travel insurance is designed to provide peace of mind to a traveller. It covers different risks that an individual faces during his or her trip, right from take-off until the time of return. Falling ill before or during a trip is a common concern for many. Some of the questions that run through one’s mind include - “Will I be reimbursed if I have to cancel my trip due to an illness?”, “What if I require medical assistance while travelling?”, “Will the insurance provider cover my hospital bills if I am admitted in a foreign country?”, etc.

Now, the good news is that medical coverage is part of travel insurance. Here is a look at what travel insurance typically covers with regards to medical expenses.

  • Hospitalization: In case the policyholder’s health condition deteriorates to the point that he or she has to be hospitalized, all the associated expenses, including ambulance charges, will be covered by the insurance provider.
  • Medical Treatment: If the policyholder gets hurt or requires consultation for an illness, then the expenses and the cost of medication, shall be covered by the company.
  • Accommodation: An extended stay as a result of an illness or an injury would be taken care of by the insurer.
  • Emergency Evacuation: The costs in relation to emergency repatriation, including those of an air ambulance, will be covered.

Most of the travel insurance policies in the market cover medical expenses borne during foreign travel. While they don’t cover pre-existing ailments, expenses for blood tests, x-rays, and other pathological tests are generally covered. Based on the insurance provider’s network of hospitals in that country, the policyholder can also avail cashless hospitalization facilities.

Prior to buying a travel insurance cover, individuals are advised to ensure that it covers medical bills. It is always wise to opt for a travel insurance plan that provides medical coverage abroad. Shortlist insurance companies that have a good network of cashless hospitals in the nation that the policyholder is visiting. Additionally, consider the claim settlement ratios of the insurance providers. Go through the list of exclusions, and compare travel insurance plans before availing the one that best-meets all of one’s insurance needs.
