Learning License in Tamil Nadu

Being able to drive a motor vehicle gives an individual the freedom to roam around anywhere, anytime in any part of India. Tamil Nadu learning license can be obtained by an individual by following an application process that needs to be followed on attaining a few eligibility requirements. An application for a permanent driving license can be made only after obtaining a learning license which is a restricted license that gives an individual the freedom to practice driving on Indian roads, in the company of a person holding a permanent license. The Tamil Nadu RTO is given the responsibility of issuing learning license to individuals who wish to drive the below types of vehicles:

Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining a Learning License in Tamil Nadu

The below eligibility requirements have to be followed by an individual for obtaining Tamil Nadu learning license.

  • To obtain a learning license for a light motor vehicle, an individual should have attained the age of 18 years.
  • Learning license for a motorcycle not exceeding an engine capacity of 50cc can be obtained by an individual who is above the age of 16 years.
  • Commercial learning license can be obtained by an individual who is above the age of 20 years.
  • A commercial learning license in Tamil Nadu is issued to an individual who is holding a learning license for a light motor vehicle for not less than a year.
  • The individual applying for a learning license in Tamil Nadu has to be well aware of all the traffic rules and regulations.

Documents required for obtaining a learning license in Tamil Nadu

  • Medical certificate and physical fitness Form 1 and Form 1A
  • Age and address proof documents such as passport, Aadhar Card, PAN card, school certificate, birth certificate, etc.
  • Application Form 2
  • Application fee of Rs. 150
  • Recent passport size photographs

How to Obtain a Learning License in Tamil Nadu?

To obtain a permanent DL in Tamil Nadu, it’s mandatory for an individual to obtain a learning license as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The application for a permanent learning license in Tamil Nadu can be made online or offline directly at the RTO by following the below-mentioned process.

Online application process for obtaining a learning license in Tamil Nadu

  • Visit Ministry of Road Transport & Highways Website-
  • Click on online services and select driving license related services
  • Enter the name of the state-Tamil Nadu
  • Click on apply online and select learning license
  • Fill the application form
  • Upload the documents online
  • Pay the application fees
  • Book an online slot for the LL test
  • Appear for the LL test on the given date and time
  • On passing the test, the Tamil Nadu learning license is issued to the applicant.

Offline application process for obtaining a learning license in Tamil Nadu

  • Visit the nearest RTO office
  • Download the form from the Tamil Nadu Transport website-www.tn.gov.in
  • Submit the duly filled form along with the relevant documents to the RTO office
  • Book a slot for the learning license test. Slot for learning license test can be booked online through www.tn.gov.in.
  • Appear for the online test on the given date and time
  • Pass the test to obtain the learning license in Tamil Nadu

How to Obtain a Duplicate Learning License in Tamil Nadu?

A duplicate driving license in Tamil Nadu is issued to an individual whose original learning license is stolen, lost or damaged. If the learning license is stolen, then an applicant will have to file an FIR in the jurisdiction where he lost his learning license. The applicant will have to submit a written application to the RTO stating the reason for obtaining a duplicate LL.

  • Age and address proof documents
  • Applicable application fee
  • Form LLD
  • FIR copy, if the license is stolen
  • Attested affidavit stating the loss of the learning license

The application process for obtaining a duplicate learning license in Tamil Nadu

The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes it mandatory for an individual to appear and pass the learning license test to be able to apply for a Tamil Nadu driving license. The application for the learning license test can be made either online or offline at the RTO. An application fee will have to be paid to appear for the test. Once the fee is paid, the applicant can appear for the LL test. The Tamil Nadu learning license test is conducted in the presence of a Motor Vehicles Inspector who assesses the applicant’s knowledge of various traffic rules and regulations. Depending on the qualification of the applicant, the test is conducted either online or offline. If the applicant passes the LL test, the learning license is issued to him via courier. On failing the test, the applicant can re-appear for the LL test after 7 days.

The applicant can apply for a permanent DL in Tamil Nadu after 30 days or before 180 days from the date of issuance of the learning license.
