Driving License in Maharashtra

A driving license is one of the most important documents you can possess as it gives you the legal freedom to drive your motorised vehicle on Indian roads. The State Transport Department of Maharashtra is responsible for the swift working of the road transport system in the state and one of its primary duties is to issue a driving license to its citizens.

Types of Driving License in Maharashtra

You can opt for a driving license in Maharashtra on the basis of the type of vehicle you wish to drive. The state transport department of Maharashtra offers you the below types of driving license you wish to operate.

Transport Vehicle: Applicants who want to drive commercial and goods carriage vehicles can apply for this driving license type.

A transport vehicle driving license is further classified into the following types/categories:

  • Light Motor Vehicle: this driving license type includes light motor vehicles such as jeeps, auto rickshaws, delivery vans, etc.
  • Medium Passenger Vehicle: this category includes tempos, minivans used for ferrying passengers
  • Medium Goods Vehicle: this category includes tempos, delivery trucks/vans used for transportation of goods
  • Heavy Passenger Vehicle: this category includes large buses used for transport of passengers
  • Heavy Goods Vehicle: this category includes vehicles such as huge trucks and vans used for commercial transport of goods.
  • Road roller

Non-Transport Vehicle: Applicants who want to drive private vehicles can opt for a non-transport vehicle.

A non-transport driving license type is based on the following categories of DL:

Eligibility Criteria for obtaining a Driving License in Maharashtra

Before applying for a driving license, it’s important you meet the requirements of the eligibility criteria for obtaining a DL in Maharashtra.

  • To be eligible to apply for a permanent driving license in Maharashtra, an individual should first have a learner’s license.
  • An individual can apply for a permanent DL 30 days after the learner’s license is issued and within 180 days from the date of issue of the learner’s license
  • To apply for a driving license for a two-wheeler with engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc, individuals should be above the age of 16 years.
  • To apply for a driving license for a motor vehicle such as a car, sedan, etc, an individual should be above the age of 20 years.

  • Birth Certificate

Online application Process for Driving License in Maharashtra:

The Maharashtra state government has made driving application process an easy procedure as you can now easily get the form online and can also submit documents online.

You will have to follow the below steps to get a driving license online in Maharashtra:

  • Visit sarathi.nic.in, ministry of road transport and highways website.
  • On the homepage, click on the ‘driving license’ tab and download the form for a new driving license. You will get form number 4 i.e. the application form for obtaining a permanent driving license.
  • Fill in all the details in the form and submit the form online with the supporting documents.
  • You will then receive an application number and a notification notifying you that your application has been processed.
  • You can then go ahead and book an appointment for your driving license test.
  • To book an appointment for your driving license test, you will have to follow the below procedure:
  • Visit sarathi.nic.in and on the homepage select the ‘appointment for slot booking’ option.
  • Fill in your details on the page and select the suitable date and time for your test.
  • Once you have scheduled the appointment, visit the RTO for your driving with your original documents.
  • If you pass the test, you will receive your driving license by post at your registered address.

Offline application process for Maharashtra driving license

Individuals in Maharashtra can apply for a driving license offline by visiting the nearest RTO office in their area.

  • You will have to procure the form from the RTO office and submit it there with all the relevant documents.
  • On submission of the form and documents, your application will be verified and you will get a confirmation about your eligibility for DL.
  • If you are eligible, then you will have to visit the RTO office for your driving test.

How to Get a Duplicate Driving License in Maharashtra?

In Maharashtra, you can apply for a duplicate driving license under the below-mentioned conditions: In case of theft, loss or damage caused to DL In case of mutilation or if the DL is torn In case of smart card DL, if the chip is damaged A duplicate driving license is not issued to individuals who have been barred from applying it or to those who already possess one.

Procedure for applying for a driving license in Maharashtra: An applicant is required to submit the application form and relevant documents at the RTO office in person In case the applicant has changed his state/city, he will have to get a no objection certificate from the RTO that provided him with the original DL. On submission of all the documents and fees, the RTO will then verify all the documents and the driving license will be issued to the applicant. Note: If you have not applied for a duplicate driving license within 6 months from the date of its loss/theft, then you will have to send an application to the headquarters of the transport department for approval.

How to Renew Driving License in Maharashtra?

Ideally, a driving license is valid for a period of 20 years or until the age of 50, whichever is earlier. In Maharashtra, an individual can renew a driving license within 30 days from the date of expiry.

Individuals who want to renew their driving license in Maharashtra can follow the below renewal process:

  • The individual will have to visit the RTO office in person and collect the renewal form.
  • The form will then have to be filled and submitted to the RTO office along with the relevant documents.
  • On submission of the form and documents, the applicant will have to pay a fee of Rs. 416and will receive a receipt of the application fee.
  • The applicant will then receive the renewed driving license by post at their registered address.
  • Driving license that has lapsed over 5 years cannot be renewed and the applicant will have to apply for a fresh driving license and also appear for the driving test.
  • Individuals who have been barred from applying for a driving license are not eligible to apply.

Documents required for renewal of driving license in Maharashtra

  • Form 9 i.e. the form for renewal of driving license
  • Form 1 i.e. the form of physical fitness declaration
  • Form 1(A) i.e. the form for a medical certificate. Individuals above 50 years have to submit this form.
  • 3 passport size photographs
  • No objection certificate has to be submitted if the renewal has to be done at the RTO other than the RTO that provided you with the original driving license
