  • Account opening: The SSY account can be opened only in the name of the girl child. The account can be opened by her parents or legal guardians, no other person is entitled to open account. The account can be opened with a nominal deposit amount of Rs. 1000. Other features of the account state that only one account per girl child can be opened, the account can be opened with post office or with government notified banks like ICICI, and the account is freely transferable across India.
  • Deposit: The SSY account can be opened with a minimal deposit amount of Rs. 1000. Once the account is opened, the subsequent contributions can be made in multiples of Rs. 100. The maximum contribution under the SSY account is capped to Rs 1.50 Lakhs per annum for which the depositor can claim tax benefit u/s 80C. Kindly note, the initial deposit amount is to be made in cash.
  • Account operator and depositor: The account shall be opened in the name of the girl child. The natural or legal guardian are the depositor of the account and they can operate the account only till the account holder turns 18 years, once the girl is above 18 years of age, she can independently operate the account.
  • Account Tenure: The tenure of the account is 21 years from the date of opening.
  • Partial Withdrawal: Partial withdrawal up to 50% of the accumulated funds can be exercised in order to meet financial expenses occurring at the time of marriage or higher education. Any such partial withdrawal is allowed only when the account holder i.e. girl child attains the age of 18.
  • Account Revival: In case of default in paying the minimum amount of Rs. 1000 per year. The SSY account shall become inactive in such cases a penalty of Rs. 50 is payable for per year of default plus Rs. 1000 outstanding for every year.

Can Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account be closed before maturity?

  • Submit the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account transfer request application form at the existing post office or bank branch. Kindly note, mention the address of the ICICI bank branch where you wish to transfer your Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account.
  • Your existing post office or bank branch shall arrange to send your original documents to ICICI Bank Branch where you wish to open the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account, along with the Cheque or Demand Draft of the existing outstanding balance accumulated in your Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account.
