SRN In Aadhaar: What it Means, Use and Importance

You must have wondered what is that huge number you get when you request any Aadhaar-related service. That huge number is called “SRN”. It is used for tracking your request in Aadhaar. This number is generated when you request for services like mobile-linking, request for re-printing aadhar, etc. You can use this number to check the status of your request. This is a temporary number that stays till your request is fulfilled, and is a necessary component to maintain and track records while updating your Aadhaar.

What is SRN in Aadhaar?

SRN or Service Request Number is a unique identifier generated automatically when you request for Aadhaar-related services. It is a 28-digit number which is unique and random. It works similar to URN (Update Request number), but is generally generated to track requests initiated by a validation letter.

What is the purpose of SRN?

Service Request Number (SRN) is required for tracking your service requests with Aadhaar. For a validation letter, this number is generated instantly when the request is made. The main purposes of SRN are:

  • Tracking the requested service from Aadhaar
  • Reference number for any queries taken to UIDAI.
  • Verifying for the validation letter. (can act as a secret code to the verifier)

When is the SRN allotted?

SRN is allotted to you when you submit a request for aadhaar related services to UIDAI. These services may include:

  • Applying for updating aadhaar card (address, mobile number linking)
  • Requesting for Aadhaar PVC card
  • Requesting for a Validation letter
  • Booking an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra

How to check Aadhaar Update-Request Status with SRN?

In order to check the request status of your Aadhaar with SRN, follow these simple steps:

  • Visit UIDAI website
  • Navigate to “My Aadhaar” section
  • From the drop down menu look for “Check Aadhaar Update Status”
  • Select “SRN” option and type in your 28 digit SRN Number
  • Enter the Captcha and hit Submit

SRN are automatically generated when you submit a request, and the only way to re-generate a SRN is by re-applying for the same request. (This will generate a new SRN for the same request type)

How to retrieve or re-generate a lost SRN for Aadhaar?

When a SRN is generated, it is sent to you via SMS, Email and an acknowledgement slip. You can find your SRN by:

  • Checking your email (Use word UIDAI to search specific emails)
  • Check your SMS inbox
  • Check your Acknowledgment Slip
  • Contact UIDAI Support and provide necessary information, they may provide you with the SRN back.
  • Call UIDAI Helpline : 1947
  • In case a request is denied or rejected for some reason and you submit a new request, a new SRN is generated for that request.

SRN are automatically generated when you submit a request, and the only way to re-generate a SRN is by re-applying for the same request. (This will generate a new SRN for the same request type)

How to Manage your SRN?

As SRN is a crucial component for tracking your request status for Aadhaar, managing SRN is essential. SRN can leak your Aadhaar details as it shows status for your requests, if misplaced or goes into wrong hands. Carefully track your SRNs.

  • Track your SRNs via Email and SMS
  • You can physically write down the SRN, but place it in a secure location
  • You can store your SRN in a spreadsheet or a notepad on your compute (Beware of malware) Regularly check for updates.

Summary

To summarize the entire article, SRN (Service Request Number) is a unique identifier number that helps you track your Aadhaar service request status. Service Request Number works similarly to Update Request Number. SRN also serves as one of the key components in a validation letter. All in all, it's a step towards digital progress and a transparent working of Aadhaar. Keep your data safe and private to avoid any leaks.
