How to Apply for Aadhar Card

The Aadhaar Card is a unique 12-digit number for residents of India, the application process for which is undertaken by UIDAI and the card is issued by the Government of India. Its objective is to improve the regulation and distribution of public welfare scheme services. It is an accepted proof of residence within India and is not be used as proof of citizenship.

Corrections to the enrolment form can be made free of cost within 96 hours of submission. For any rectifications that may need to be made after 96 hours, the same format has to be used but on additional charges payable to the government.

  • After all the submitted documents have been attached, submit your biometric data like fingerprints and retina scan
  • Submit your Passport-size Photograph

  • You can receive the e-Aadhaar Number by using either of these numbers:

If you have the Enrolment Number:

  • Enter the Enrolment Number
  • Enter the time and date as mentioned in the acknowledgement slip
  • Enter your name, area pin code and contact number that you have registered for Aadhaar

If you have your Aadhaar Number:

  • Enter it along with your name, area pin code and contact number registered with Aadhaar
  • You will then receive a One Time Password or OTP on your registered contact, which you will have to enter to be able to download a coloured version of the Aadhaar letter

The 14-digit Enrolment Number that you will receive on applying for your Aadhaar Card can be used to check the status of Aadhaar. You can follow these steps to track the status:

Step 1: Visit UIDAI’s official website

Step 2: Click on the option ‘Check Aadhaar Status’ and enter the Enrolment Number

Step 3: You have to then submit a security code

Can a US citizen apply for Aadhar card?

Yes, any US citizen who has resided in India for at least 182 days in the past year is eligible to apply aadhar card online. However, remember that an Aadhaar Card is not considered as a proof of citizenship.

What If you don't receive the Aadhaar Card OTP?

There are different reasons why applicants don’t receive the Aadhaar card OTP. There are solutions for each of these problems. You have to understand the reason for you not having received it, so you can address the problem accordingly.

If you have not registered your contact number: Update the Aadhaar Card Enrolment/Correction Form with your contact number to receive the OTP in the registered contact number.

If your SIM is blocked: If the contact number that you have registered with Aadhaar is inactive for two or more months, service providers usually block it. You have to get your SIM Card unblocked to receive the OTP.

If you are facing network connectivity issues: If your locality usually faces poor network coverage, you have to go to an area with good network coverage before you request for the OTP.

If your contact number has insufficient storage space: Make sure that your mobile phone has adequate space before you opt for generation of OTP.

If your Aadhaar Card application has been rejected: An application may get rejected due to a lack of accurate documentation or if you had enrolled earlier. If you are not receiving the OTP, check the application status to know whether it has been rejected. In that case, you have to reapply for your Aadhaar Card and complete the registration process.
