Driving License Form

A driving license is a mandatory requirement for all those who wish to ride a motor vehicle on Indian roads. No matter what type of vehicle you desire to drive or ride, if you do not have a valid driving license, you cannot legally ply your vehicle on the road. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes it mandatory for every vehicle owner to procure a driving license in order to legally drive a vehicle in public places.

But the first step towards getting a driving license is by applying for one by filing out/procuring a driving license form.

A DL form is an application form that requires you to fill in your basic details on the basis of which your driving license will be produced. A driving license is your identity document that is issued by the regional transport office (RTO). To obtain a driving license, you will first have to procure a driving license form from the RTO office in your jurisdiction.

You can also get a DL form online from your state transport department’s website, only if this facility is available in your state. A few states don’t allow online application, but a few that offer, permit you to download the DL form online.

On downloading the form online, you simply need to fill it and submit it at your nearest RTO office along with the relevant documents.

Documents Required for Driving License Form

After getting the driving license form from the RTO or downloading it online, you will have to submit the form along with the below mentioned documents.

Here is a list of documents that you require to submit along with your driving license form:

  • Duly filled and signed application form 1 and form 1-A i.e. the medical certificate. These forms can be downloaded from your state RTO website or you can directly get it from the RTO office.
  • Registration certificate and vehicle insurance documents
  • Passport size photographs
  • In case if the applicant is not the owner of the vehicle a letter of consent has to be obtained from the owner of the vehicle.
  • Age and address proof
  • Pay the necessary fees (this may vary for different states)

What are the Basic Fields Included in a Driving License Form?

A driving license form contains the below mentioned fields that the applicant is required to fill and submit.

Type of vehicle: You must tick the type of vehicle you want to avail the driving license for. Example: If you applying for a DL for a light motor vehicle/heavy motor vehicle, vehicle with gear, vehicle without gear, etc.

Details of the applicant: You will need to fill basic information about yourself i.e. full name, name of son/daughter/mother/father, place of birth, date of birth, educational qualifications, blood group, etc.

You will also have to specify the below details about yourself:

  • Whether or not you have held a driving license in the past
  • Whether or not you have been convicted while holding the current license
  • Whether you have been disqualified from obtaining a driving license
  • If you have been subjected to a driving test for testing your ability to drive the vehicle for which you have applied for a driving license.
  • Along with this, you will have to submit documents such as age proof, address proof, photographs, learner’s license, medical certificate, payment of fees, etc.

Driving License or Learner's License Form Printing

To print form for driving license or learner’s license online, you will have to follow the below process:

  • Visit parivahan.gov.in and click on apply online tab in the side bar on the left side of the website.
  • Click on new driving license and then click on continue
  • Enter your learner’s license number and date of birth
  • You can also download the below mentioned forms online
  • Form 2 i.e. learner’s license form
  • Form 4 i.e. new driving license form
  • Form 8 i.e. form for addition of new class of vehicle
  • Form 9 i.e. form for renewal of driving license

How to Download Driving License Form?

To get a driving license form, you will have to follow the below process:

  • Register yourself to sarathi.nic.in
  • Click on application form for driving license (DL)
  • Fill up the form properly i.e. the applicant details, address details, class of vehicles and documents.
  • Then click on submit and you will get a pop up on the screen saying that your application has been saved successfully
  • Prior to submission, note down the application number
  • Then take an appointment at the RTO for driving license. You can take an appointment for driving license test online by clicking on ‘appointment for DL test’.
  • Click on DL slot booking and choose DL test using your application number and date of birth.
  • Select the time and date as per your choice and reach for the test half an hour before the test.

How is Driving License Test Conducted?

To take a driving license test, you will have to visit the nearest RTO office. You will be asked to drive a motor vehicle on an 8-shaped track, S-shaped track or a parallel parking. You can also be asked to drive on an upward slope by preventing any backward movement.

The test will be conducted in the presence of an RTO official who will give you the result of the test. If you pass the test, you will receive your driving license within a period of 30 days.

No, driving license form is the same for all types of vehicle.

Why is form 1 important while obtaining a driving license?

To obtain a driving license, an applicant has to fill and submit form 1 along with form 4 and form1A while applying for a DL. Form 1 is the form for application cum declaration form of physical fitness. This form is important for the applicant to truthfully declare if he suffers from any disability or disease that might cause hindrance in operation of driving a motor vehicle.

If I fail the driving license test for the first time, then will I have to pay the fees again while reapplying for a DL?

Yes, you will have to pay a fee of Rs. 500 while reapplying for a DL test. You can reapply for a DL test 7 days from the date of failing the test.

Is it necessary to be trained for driving from a motor training school?

In case of private vehicles, you do not need to be trained from a motor training school. But for commercial vehicles, getting trained from a motor training school is important to get form 5 i.e. driving certificate issued by driving school or establishment.
