Punjab Learning License

Obtaining a learning license is the first step towards getting a permanent driving license in the state of Punjab. However, to obtain a learner’s license in Punjab, an applicant has to go through an application process which requires him to submit a few documents and pass a test. On passing the learning license test, the applicant can apply for a permanent DL after 30 days or within 180 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s license. A learner’s license is issued by the Punjab RTO to give an individual the legal freedom to practice driving on Indian roads in the company of a permanent DL holder. To obtain a learning license in Punjab, an applicant will have to follow the below-mentioned application process.

A motor insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Punjab RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

Types of Learning License issued in Punjab

The Punjab RTO issues a learner’s license to an individual on the basis of the vehicle type he wants to drive.

  • Learning license for a motorcycle without gear
  • Learning license for a motorcycle with gear
  • Learning license for a light motor vehicle
  • Learning license for a medium goods vehicle
  • Learning license for a medium passenger vehicle
  • Learning license for a heavy goods vehicle

Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining Punjab Learning License

To make sure an applicant has a hassle-free experience while obtaining a learning license in Punjab, here are a few eligibility criteria given by the Punjab RTO:

  • An individual should be above the age of 16 years to obtain learning license for a motorcycle not exceeding an engine capacity of 50cc.
  • Commercial learning license can be obtained by an individual who is above the age of 20 years.
  • Learning license for driving a private vehicle can be obtained by an individual who is above the age of 18 years.
  • The individual applying for a learning license should be aware of traffic rules and regulations.

  • Visit Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Website-parivahan.gov.in/parivahan
  • Click on online services and select driving license related services
  • Enter the name of the state-Punjab

How to Obtain a Duplicate Learning License in Punjab?

A duplicate learning license in Punjab can be obtained if an individual loses his DL due to theft, damage or loss of it. An application for the duplicate LL has to be made at the Punjab RTO and the applicant is required to submit the below documents and write an application to the RTO.

The online application can be made through parivahan.gov.in/parivahan wherein the applicant can submit the form, documents and pay the fees online. Once the application is processed, the applicant will have to visit the RTO along with the copies of the original documents. On the basis of verification, the duplicate DL is issued to the applicant. An application for duplicate LL can also be made at the RTO by downloading the form through olps.punjabtransport.org.

Learning License Test Procedure in Punjab

In order to legally drive a motor vehicle in Punjab, an individual will have to first obtain a learning license for which he will have to pass a learning license test. A learning license test in Punjab is conducted to test an applicant’s knowledge about traffic rules and regulations. The applicant has to visit the RTO to give the test that is either conducted online or offline. The test is conducted in the presence of a Motor Vehicles Inspector who declares the results of the same. To appear for the test, the applicant can book a test slot either online through or directly at the RTO. On passing the test, the learning license is delivered to the applicant at his doorstep.
