Driving License in Nagaland

Acquiring a driving license is the first step towards getting your license to thrill around public areas in India. As per Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory for a vehicle owner to possess a driving license to be able to drive a motor vehicle in Nagaland. The state Motor Vehicles Department of Nagaland has entrusted the regional transport authority of the state to carry out various services related to the issuance of driving licenses.

A driving license is an official document that permits an individual to drive his vehicle in public places. In Nagaland, no person is allowed to drive a motor vehicle without a valid driving license. To procure a driving license in Nagaland, an individual will have to follow the below procedure to obtain the DL without any hassles.

A car insurance is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Nagaland RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

Types of Driving License in Nagaland

Driving license is issued on the basis of the type of vehicle that an individual wants to drive. In the state of Nagaland, a driving license is issued on the basis of following vehicle types:

Vehicle Type-For Transport Purpose:

  • Light motor vehicle: this type of DL includes cars, jeeps, delivery vans, etc.
  • Medium passenger vehicle: this type of DL includes tempos and minivans
  • Medium goods vehicle: this type of DL includes tempos and trucks
  • Heavy passenger vehicle: this type of DL includes buses
  • Heavy goods vehicle: this type of DL includes tempos and trucks used for transportation of goods

Vehicle type-For Non-Transport Purpose:

  • Motorcycles without gear: this type of DL includes two-wheelers, scooters, mopeds
  • Light motor vehicle: this type of DL includes all types of cars, hatchbacks and sedans.
  • Motorcycle with gear: this type of DL includes all types of vehicles

Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining a Driving License in Nagaland

An individual has to meet the below eligibility requirements for obtaining a driving license in the state of Nagaland:

  • For driving motor-cycles with an engine capacity not exceeding 50 CC, the applicant should have attained the age of 16 years.
  • For driving motor cycles with an engine capacity exceeding 50 CC, the applicant should have attained the age of 18 years.
  • For driving a heavy transport vehicle, the applicant should have attained the age of 20 years.
  • The applicant should be aware of all the traffic rules and regulations.
  • The applicant should apply for a permanent DL after 30 days or within 180 days from the date of issuance of a learner’s license.

Documents Required for Obtaining a Driving License in Nagaland

To obtain a driving license in the state of Nagaland, an individual will have to submit the below list of documents to the RTO office.

Age proof: (Attested copy of any one of the below documents)

  • Passport
  • School certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Voters ID
  • PAN Card
  • Certificate issued from local/state or central body

Address proof: (Attested copy of any one of the below documents)

How to Apply for a Driving License in Nagaland?

In the state of Nagaland, an applicant can apply for a driving license by following the below mentioned steps:

  • Visit the nearest RTO office
  • Collect the application form or download the application form online mvd.nagaland.gov.in/files/downloads.html
  • Fill the form and attach all the relevant documents
  • Submit the form and the documents at the RTO office
  • Book a slot for your driving license test to be conducted.
  • Appear for the driving license test.
  • On passing the test and verification of the documents, the applicant will be issued the driving license.

How to Get a Duplicate Driving License in Nagaland?

In Nagaland, a duplicate driving license is issued in case of theft, loss or mutilation. In case of loss or mutilation, an individual will have to provide the particulars of his DL i.e. the license number. If the applicant does not remember his license number, then he will have to apply for a fresh driving license.

An applicant will have to submit the below list of documents for procuring a driving license in Nagaland:

  • Application form LLD
  • FIR copy, if the license is stolen
  • Challan clearance report from the traffic police
  • Application fee of Rs. 200

For procuring a driving license in Nagaland, the applicant will have to visit the licensing authority and collect the form from there or download it online. The applicant will then have to fill the form and submit it with all the required documents. On verification of the documents, the applicant will be issued a new driving license.

How to Renew Driving License in Nagaland?

Just like your car insurance requires renewal, your driving license too is subject to renewal. In the state of Nagaland, a driving license is valid for 20 years or until the age of 50. Driving license for a commercial vehicle is subject to renewal after every 3 years.

Documents required for renewing driving license in Nagaland:

  • Application form 9
  • Application fee of Rs. 250
  • 2 copies of your recent passport size photographs
  • Driving license
  • Age and address proof
  • Form 1A
  • Driver refreshing training certificate for commercial vehicles

For obtaining a renewed driving license in Nagaland, the applicant will have to visit the nearest RTO and collect the form from there. The applicant can also procure the form online through mvd.nagaland.gov.in/files/downloads.html. The applicant will have to fill the form and submit it along with the relevant documents. Once the documents are verified, the applicant will receive the renewed DL on the same day. The renewed DL for a commercial vehicle is issued after few days

How to Obtain an International Driving License in Nagaland?

Your wish to legally drive a motor vehicle abroad can now be fulfilled as you can easily obtain an International driving license in Nagaland. An international driving license is valid for a period of 1 year and is issued from the transport commissioner’s office in the city of Kohima.

Documents required for obtaining an International driving license in Nagaland:

  • Valid driving license
  • Valid passport
  • Valid visa
  • Two passport size photographs
  • Applicable application fee of Rs. 500
  • Attested copy of address proof
  • Other age and address proof documents
  • Application form 4-A that can be downloaded online or mvd.nagaland.gov.in/files/downloads.html can be procured from the RTO office.

The applicant will have to fill the form and submit all the relevant documents to the RTO office. On verification of the documents, the applicant will be issued the International driving permit. However, the IDP is issued only between 10:30AM-2:30PM.

Driving License Test Procedure in Nagaland

For obtaining a driving license in Nagaland, an applicant has to undergo a driving license that is conducted as per rule 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The test is conducted in the presence of a motor vehicles inspector who will gauge the applicant’s driving skills. The applicant will be asked to drive his vehicle and can be questioned about various traffic rules and regulations, vehicle system and safety. For the test, the applicant will have to bring his own vehicle.
