MV Hondius Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Raises Global Health Concerns

Shashi Kumar 08 May 2026

The recent hantavirus outbreak aboard the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius has sparked global concern after three passengers died among the five confirmed cases reported by 8 May 2026.

MV Hondius Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak

The World Health Organisation (WHO) was first notified about the cluster of severe respiratory illness cases on 2 May 2026, with investigations later confirming the involvement of the Hantavirus (Andes virus strain). The incident has drawn international attention as passengers and crew members, including two Indian crew members, travelled across 12 countries before health authorities identified the outbreak. While the WHO has urged caution, it has also clarified that the situation is not comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a group of rodent-borne viruses that can cause severe and potentially fatal diseases in humans. These viruses belong to the Hantaviridae family and are mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodents, their urine, saliva, or droppings. According to the WHO, hantavirus infections can affect the lungs, heart, kidneys, and blood vessels, depending on the virus strain and geographical region.

Hantavirus infections are known by different medical names based on the type of illness they cause:

1. Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS)

Commonly reported in North and South America, this severe form affects the lungs and heart and can rapidly become life-threatening.

2. Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS)

Mostly found in Europe and Asia, this form primarily affects the kidneys and blood vessels.

The strain identified in the MV Hondius outbreak is the Andes virus, which is mainly found in South America. It is currently the only known hantavirus strain with documented limited human-to-human transmission among close contacts.

The MV Hondius Hantavirus Outbreak: What Happened?

The Cruise Ship and Voyage

The outbreak was linked to the MV Hondius, a luxury expedition cruise ship that departed from Argentina in early April 2026 for a wildlife and polar exploration voyage through remote South Atlantic regions. The vessel was carrying 147 passengers and crew members, including two Indian crew members. Before the outbreak was identified, passengers had already travelled across 12 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Singapore, Canada, and several others, triggering international monitoring and contact tracing efforts.

How Did the Outbreak Begin?

According to investigations, passengers aboard the ship began developing symptoms between 6 April and 28 April 2026. Authorities are examining a possible rodent exposure source during one of the expedition stops near a remote bird and wildlife observation area in Argentina, where rat droppings were reportedly found in an enclosed shelter site visited during the journey.

Health experts suspect the virus may have spread after passengers inhaled virus-contaminated particles from infected rodent urine, saliva, or faeces.

The outbreak has been linked to the Andes virus strain, a rare hantavirus variant found in South America that is known for limited human-to-human transmission.

Confirmed Cases and Deaths

The World Health Organisation (WHO) was officially notified about the outbreak on 2 May 2026.

By 4 May 2026:

  • 7 linked cases had been identified

  • 2 cases were laboratory-confirmed hantavirus infections

  • 5 were suspected cases

Later reports confirmed:

  • 5 total confirmed cases

  • 3 deaths among confirmed cases

  • 1 critically ill patient

  • Several passengers with mild symptoms

Among the fatalities was a 69-year-old Dutch woman, while reports also identified a Dutch couple among the infected passengers.

Symptoms reported among infected passengers included:

  • Fever

  • Gastrointestinal illness

  • Vomiting and abdominal pain

  • Rapidly progressing pneumonia

  • Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

  • Shock and respiratory failure

WHO’s Take on the Hantavirus Outbreak

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has clarified that the hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship is “not comparable” to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maria Van Kerkhove said hantavirus spreads “very differently” from Covid-19 and influenza, adding that transmission usually requires “close, intimate contact.” She also confirmed that passengers aboard the ship were instructed to wear masks, while healthcare workers were advised to use higher-grade PPE.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that the outbreak involves the Andes virus strain found in Latin America, which is known for limited human-to-human transmission. He also noted that the virus can have an incubation period of up to six weeks.

WHO currently expects the outbreak to remain “limited” if public health measures and contact tracing continue to be effective, while also warning that additional cases may still emerge during ongoing monitoring efforts.

What’s Next?

Health authorities are continuing investigations and monitoring efforts linked to the MV Hondius outbreak.

  • Contact tracing of passengers and crew across multiple countries

  • Testing and medical monitoring of exposed individuals

  • Investigation into the exact source of rodent exposure

  • Monitoring for possible additional cases during the six-week incubation period

How Does Hantavirus Spread?

Hantavirus primarily spreads through contact with infected rodents, especially through their urine, saliva, or droppings. Humans can become infected after inhaling contaminated airborne particles in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas.

Common exposure sources include:

  • Rodent-infested shelters or cabins

  • Contaminated dust particles

  • Direct contact with rodent waste

  • Rarely, rodent bites

According to WHO, the Andes virus strain involved in the cruise ship outbreak is one of the few hantavirus variants known for limited human-to-human transmission. However, such spread is considered uncommon and usually requires prolonged close contact with an infected person.

Should You Be Worried?

Health experts and the World Health Organisation currently assess the global risk from the MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak as low. Unlike COVID-19, hantavirus does not spread easily through casual contact or large-scale airborne transmission. For now, WHO believes the hantavirus outbreak is likely to remain limited if monitoring, isolation, and public health measures continue effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hantavirus contagious between humans?

Most hantavirus strains do not spread between humans. However, the Andes virus strain linked to the MV Hondius outbreak is known for limited human-to-human transmission through prolonged close contact.

What are the first symptoms of hantavirus?

Early symptoms usually include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. Severe cases can rapidly progress to breathing difficulties and pneumonia.

How deadly is hantavirus?

Hantavirus can be highly dangerous in severe cases. According to WHO, some hantavirus infections in the Americas can have fatality rates of up to 50% if not treated early.

Is there a cure or vaccine for hantavirus?

Currently, there is no specific antiviral cure or approved vaccine for hantavirus. Treatment mainly focuses on supportive medical care and early hospitalisation.

How long does hantavirus take to show symptoms?

Symptoms can appear anywhere between one and eight weeks after exposure, depending on the virus strain and severity of infection.

Can hantavirus spread through air?

Hantavirus can spread through airborne particles contaminated with infected rodent urine, saliva, or droppings, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

How can hantavirus be prevented?

Hantavirus prevention mainly involves avoiding contact with rodents and contaminated areas. Maintaining hygiene, safely cleaning rodent-infested spaces, and avoiding exposure to rodent droppings can reduce infection risk.
