Documents that no longer need linking with Aadhaar
Prior to September 2018, the following documents were to be compulsorily linked with Aadhaar card-
- Bank Account details
- Voter ID card
- LPG Connection
- Ration Card
- PAN Card
- Mobile Number
However, post September, the Supreme Court categorised a set of services where Aadhaar linking is not mandatory. Some of them were bank account and mobile number. Also, as per the latest law, Aadhaar is not compulsorily needed to appear in UGC, NEET and CBSE examinations or for any private school admissions.
Documents that need linking with Aadhaar
Now that we’re aware of the documents or services where Aadhaar card linking is not mandatory, let’s look at the ones where this process is still compulsory as per the Supreme Court ruling -
Aadhaar-PAN card linking
According to Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory to link your Aadhaar car with your PAN Card. This linking is still compulsory so as to prevent tax evaders from making multiple PAN Cards and avoid paying taxes. You can link your Aadhaar with your PAN Card by following these simple steps-
- Type an SMS in this format- UIDPAN<12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>
- From your registered mobile number, send the message to either 56161 or 567678 In case you want to do the same online, simply follow these steps-
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing website
- Type in your PAN and Aadhaar number in the form
- Enter your name that is mentioned in your Aadhaar card
- Tick the square, if your birth year is mentioned on your Aadhaar card
- Type in the captcha code that you see in the image
- Click on the “Link Aadhaar” button
- You will see a pop-up message mentioning that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked with your PAN
Aadhaar for government welfare scheme
As mentioned before, in order to avail government benefits and subsidies, it is vital to link your Aadhaar card with government held documents such as your Ration card and LPG Connection. The submission of your Aadhaar card would serve as your unique identity and help you seamlessly avail the required benefit. To link your Aadhaar card with these services, an application form can be downloaded from the respective service’s website where you can fill in the requested details and submit at the nearest LPG distributor office or Ration card centre.
Aadhaar for filing income tax returns
As it is compulsory to link your Aadhaar card with your PAN card, Aadhaar also continues to be an essential and mandatory document while filing your income tax returns.
