Aadhaar is compulsory to avail of a number of services and to authenticate various documents. For the purpose of availing online facilities pertaining to Aadhaar, you need to register your mobile number with UIDAI, which will send the OTP for authentication. If you wish to use the mAadhaar application, your mobile number needs to be registered under Aadhaar. If your previously registered mobile number under UIDAI has been deactivated or if you wish to modify your mobile number in the Aadhaar card details, you need to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.

Why Link Your Mobile Number with Aadhaar?

Linking your mobile number with your Aadhaar card will fetch you many benefits that include:

Step 2: Go to "My Aadhaar" and select the "Check Aadhaar Status" option under the "Get Aadhaar" section.

Important Things to Know After Updating Your Mobile Number

Here are a few must-knows after you update your Aadhaar card number with your mobile number:

  • No Need to Get a New Aadhaar Card

Updating your mobile number doesn’t require reprinting your Aadhaar — the number is linked in UIDAI records, not printed on the card.

  • Update May Require a Few Days

It can take up to 72 hours for the updated number to reflect across all Aadhaar-based services.

  • Use the URN to Track Status

You’ll receive a URN (Update Request Number) on your acknowledgement slip — use it to check update status on the UIDAI portal.

  • You’ll Now Receive OTPs for All Aadhaar Services

From authentication to online address updates, your new number will receive all Aadhaar-linked OTPs.

  • Linking with Other Services is Manual

After updating Aadhaar, you’ll need to update your mobile number separately with banks, PAN, insurance, or government portals (they don’t sync automatically).

  • Ensure You Keep the Number Active

If your number is deactivated, you won’t receive OTPs for Aadhaar verification or e-KYC.

  • Only One Mobile Number Can Be Linked at a Time

UIDAI allows only one mobile number to be active per Aadhaar — the old number (if any) gets de-linked.

Consequences of Not Linking Mobile Number with Aadhaar Card

If you do not link your Aadhaar Card with your mobile number, you will not be able to access few benefits and have to face consequences like:

  • You can't access Aadhaar OTP-based online services.
  • Government subsidies like LPG and PM-KISAN may be denied.
  • PAN-Aadhaar linking becomes impossible.
  • DigiLocker and UMANG app access is restricted.
  • Aadhaar e-KYC for banking and insurance won't work.
  • You won’t receive SMS alerts for Aadhaar activity.
  • Online Aadhaar updates cannot be made.
  • Increases the risk of undetected Aadhaar misuse.
