Driving License in Andhra Pradesh

Driving a car or riding a two-wheeler gives a sense of freedom to those who are immensely passionate about travelling by roads. In today’s times where getting a car insurance or two wheeler insurance has become important, holding a driving license is also mandatory. A driving license is a mandatory document issued by the government of India giving an individual the legal freedom to drive a motor vehicle on Indian roads. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes it mandatory for individuals to possess a driving license and states that no individual can drive a motor vehicle without a valid driving license.

Obtaining a driving license in Andhra Pradesh is an easy procedure. In order to apply for a permanent driving license, it’s mandatory for an individual to first obtain a learner’s license. Further, for getting a driving license in AP, it’s also important for individuals to fit the eligibility criteria determined by the state.

The procedure for application of driving license, international driving license, renewal of an expired driving license, issuance of a duplicate driving license in Andhra Pradesh is listed below.

Types of Driving License in Andhra Pradesh:

The regional transport department of Andhra Pradesh issues licenses based on the type of the vehicle you ride or drive.

In Andhra Pradesh, a driving license is issued on the basis of following vehicle type:

Driving license for motorcycles without gear: This type of DL is issued to individuals who ride motorcycles like scooters and mopeds without gear with engine capacity not exceeding 50cc. For applying for this type of driving license, an applicant should have completed 16 years of age.

Driving license for light motor vehicles: This type of DL is issued to individuals driving light motor vehicles such as a car, bike with engine capacity exceeding 50cc, with/without gear, etc. For applying for this type of driving license, an applicant should have completed 18 years of age.

Driving license for transport vehicles: This type of DL is issued to individuals driving heavy motor vehicles such as Lorries, trucks, trailers, etc. For applying for this type of driving license, an applicant should have completed 20 years of age.

Documents for obtaining a driving license in Andhra Pradesh

You will require the below documents to procure a driving license in Andhra Pradesh

  • Four passport size photographs
  • Application form no. 4 and form 1
  • Form 1A (Medical Certificate) if the applicant is above the age of 50 and also in case the applicant is applying for a DL for transport category.
  • Form 5 - Training Certificate issued by a recognized driving school for Transport Vehicle Licence

Age proof documents: You can produce any one of the below documents:

  • Ration card
  • Voter’s ID
  • Passport
  • Pan card

Address proof documents: You can produce any one of the below documents:

  • Passport
  • Utility bills such as electricity or telephone bill

Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining Driving License in Andhra Pradesh

To be eligible to drive a motor vehicle in the state of Andhra Pradesh, an individual has to meet the below requirements.

  • Applicant must have an aadhar card
  • To apply for a motorcycle without gear with engine capacity not exceeding 50cc, the applicant should be at least 16 years of age
  • To apply for a light motor vehicle, the applicant should be at least 18 years of age and for a non-transport vehicle, the applicant should be at least 20 years of age.
  • For applying for a transport/commercial vehicle type, the applicant should have passed class 8.
  • Applicant has to pay a fee of Rs. 200 for procuring a driving license

How to obtain Driving License Offline in Andhra Pradesh?

To obtain a driving license offline in Andhra Pradesh, you will have to follow the below procedure. An applicant is eligible to apply for a permanent driving license after holding a learner’s license for a period of 30 days.

  • Fill and submit application form no 4 i.e. form for permanent driving license.
  • Individual applying for a commercial driving license has to also submit form 5 i.e. driving certificate issued by driving school or establishment.
  • Along with the application form, the applicant is also required to submit the relevant documents at the regional transport office.
  • A Fee of Rs. 200 has to be paid
  • An RTO official will then allot a slot for you to undergo a driving license test. On passing the test, you will receive your driving license by post within 2-3 weeks.

How to obtain Driving License Online in Andhra Pradesh?

  • To apply for a driving license in Andhra Pradesh, you will have to visit Andhra Pradesh state transport website-www.aptransport.org
  • Then click on license tab on the homepage and then click on permanent license tab
  • You will then be directed to this page-aprtacitizen.epragathi.org/#!/index
  • Click on license and select fresh driving license
  • You can then enter your learning license number and date of birth.
  • Fill out the form and submit all the relevant documents.
  • You can also schedule your driving license test online and select an appropriate time and date.
  • You will then have to then visit the RTO office to give the driving test.
  • On passing the test, your DL will be delivered to your registered address.

Note: The online application facility is available only in few cities of Andhra Pradesh.

How to apply for Duplicate Driving License in Andhra Pradesh?

A duplicate driving license is issued in Andhra Pradesh on the following grounds:

  • When your driving license is destroyed
  • When the license is torn, defaced or completely written up
  • When the driving license is lost or misplaced
  • You can also get a duplicate driving license in case if the photograph affixed on the DL requires replacement.

Documents required for getting a duplicate driving license:

  • Application form LLD
  • Original copy of the driving license, if available
  • In case of loss of driving license, attested copies of the DL
  • Fees of Rs. 40 and 3 passport size photographs

The applicant will have to submit the above documents at the RTO from where he first obtained his original driving license. In case of change of state, the applicant will have to get a no objection certificate from the RTO that issued his original duplicate driving license.

One can also apply for a duplicate license online by following the below steps:

  • Visit aprtacitizen.epragathi.org
  • Click on licenses on the homepage and then select the permanent driving license option
  • Then click on license tab and choose driving license
  • Under driving license, you can further select duplicate of license and then enter your date of birth, license issuing office and date of birth.

How to apply for Renewal of Driving License in Andhra Pradesh?

In Andhra Pradesh, a driving license has to be renewed within 30 days from the date of expiry.

For renewal of your driving license, you will have to follow the below process:

  • Submit application form no.9 at the RTO office that issued you the driving license
  • Submit 3 passport size photographs
  • Copy of original driving license
  • Form 1 and form 1A
  • Fees of Rs. 200 and an additional fee of Rs. 100 if the license is not renewed within the grace period of 30 days.

How to apply for International Driving License in Andhra Pradesh?

To get an International driving license in the state of Andhra Pradesh, an applicant must meet the below requirements:

  • Submit a duly filled IDP form at the RTO where he obtained the DL from or last renewed the DL
  • 3 copies of passport size photographs
  • Copies of passport and driving license
  • Along with the above documents, the applicant will also have to pay a fee of Rs. 200
  • The application form and the documents will be verified by the RTO and the applicant will receive his IDP at the registered address.

Test Procedure for obtaining a driving license in Andhra Pradesh

For undergoing the driving test, Andhra Pradesh transport department offers four different tracks- Nagole Driving test facility, Kondapur Driving test facility, Gannavaram Nagole Driving test facility, and Ampapuram Nagole Heavy Vehicle Driving test facility.

Applicants can choose any of the nearest test locations.

The applicants will have to bring their vehicle for driving test according to the class of the vehicle selected. The applicant will have to undergo the test in the presence of a motor vehicle inspector who will assess the applicants driving skills. The motor vehicle inspector will decide if the applicant is qualified to obtain the test. Following the driving test, the applicant will have to take a test related to road signals and road safety. If an applicant fails the test, he can reappear for the test within a period of 7 days.

Note: An individual will not be allowed to appear for the test without a seat belt (for LMV) and without a helmet for 2 wheelers.
