e-Verifying Income Tax Returns Using Aadhaar Card

If you want to e-verify your income tax returns using Aadhaar Card, make sure that it is linked to your PAN Card. In case you have not yet linked your Aadhaar Card to your PAN Card, you can do so by following these steps:

  • Visit the official website of e-filing income tax returns and login with your registered credentials.
  • The moment you login, a popup window will appear on the screen that will enable you to link your PAN with your Aadhaar. In case the popup does not appear, take your cursor to the ‘Profile Settings’ option on the top bar and select the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option from the dropdown menu.
  • Enter your Aadhaar Card number, check the accuracy of your PAN details and then click on ‘Save’. Post validation, the Aadhaar Card number will be linked to your PAN number.

Once linking your Aadhaar Card number to your PAN is complete, you have to follow the below steps to e-verify your ITR:

  • Visit the official website of e-filing income tax returns and login with your registered credentials.
  • Upload your ITR.
  • Next, you will have to choose the third mode of verification from the displayed options – ‘I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return’.
  • An OTP or One Time Password will be generated and sent to the mobile number that you have registered with your Aadhaar.
  • Enter this OTP as soon as you can because it will be valid only for 10 minutes.
  • Click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • A confirmation message will be displayed on your screen, which will also be sent to your registered email ID.

Can I e-verify my income tax returns with Aadhaar Card without having linked my Aadhaar Card number with ITR?

No. If you haven’t linked your Aadhaar Card number to PAN Card, you will have to do that first before being able to e-verify your returns with your Aadhaar Card number.

My OTP has been generated on my mobile number while I was linking my Aadhaar Card with e-verification of PAN. But the OTP did not work. Why did that happen?

There may be two reasons why the OTP did not work:

  • You may not have entered the OTP correctly.
  • The OTP stays valid for 10 minutes. Entering it after this timeframe does not work.

Income Tax Returns can be verified either online or offline. ITR filed online cannot be verified offline.

What are the options for e-Verification of ITR?

E-verification of Income Tax Returns can be done through any one of these three ways:
