Delhi Road Tax

The Government of India provides various facilities to its citizens. It charges some nominal amount for using these facilities, thereby generating revenue for the country. Road tax is a tax levied by the government for using its state and national highways as these highways are the property of the Government. The taxes help to maintain the roads so that people using it do not face any troubles while driving on them. There are different types of road taxes that depend on the state you are traveling in. The example of the most common road tax that is collected from vehicles is the toll tax. Since laws relating to road taxes are different for different states, we shall be elaborating a few provisions relating to road tax of Delhi. Every individual while buying a vehicle has to pay road tax over and above the purchase price and registration charges. As per the Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, it is mandatory to pay road tax in Delhi.

A car insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Delhi RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

How does one calculate road tax in Delhi?

Several factors are used to calculate road tax. Some of these are:

  • Type of vehicle - whether two or four wheelers.
  • Purpose of use – for personal or business purposes.
  • Make, model, seating capacity, engine capacity etc.

Any person who owns a vehicle shall pay road tax at the time of registration of their vehicle and thereafter, as per the prescribed rule under Section 3 of Delhi motor vehicle taxation Act, 1962.

Road Tax for Two Wheelers in Delhi

The amount of road tax payable in Delhi, as regards to two-wheelers, shall be as per the following table:

Motor cycle below 50 cc (Mopeds, Auto Cycles) Rs. 650.00
Motor Cycles & Scooters having cc above 50 cc Rs. 1,220.00
Tri Cycles Rs. 1,525.00
Motor Cycle with sewing trailer Rs. 1,525.00 + Rs. 465.00

Road Tax for Four Wheelers in Delhi

The amount of road tax payable in Delhi, as regards to four wheelers, shall be as per the following table:

Type of Passenger Vehicles Amount in Rs./year
Motor Cars less than 1000 kg Rs. 3,815.00
Motor Cars weighing more than 1000 kg but does not exceed 1500 kg. Rs. 4,880.00
Motor Car exceed than 1500 kg. But does not exceed 2000 kg. Rs. 7,020.00
Motor Car more than 2000 kg. Rs. 7,020.00 +Rs. 4570.00 + @2000.00 for every 1000kg additional.

Road Tax for Commercial Vehicles in Delhi

The amount of road tax payable in Delhi, as regards to commercial vehicles, shall be as per the following table:

More than 18 & above exc. Driver & Conductor. 1,915.00+ @ 280/- per passenger.

Road Tax for Goods Vehicles in Delhi

The amount of road tax payable in Delhi, as regards to good vehicles, shall be as per the following table:

Exceeds 6 Tonne but does not exceed 8 Tonne Rs. 2,375.00
Exceeds 8 Tonne but does not exceed 9 Tonne Rs. 2,865.00
Exceeds 9 Tonne but does not exceed 10 Tonne Rs. 3,320.00
More than 10 Tonne Rs. 3,790.00 + @Rs.470/-per Tonne

How to pay road tax in Delhi?

In case of private vehicles, the owner of the motor vehicle can deposit the road tax at the Delhi Zonal Registration office when registering the vehicle. It is a one- time payment.

  • Person holding post of Lieutenant Governor of any Union Territory in India;
  • Person designated as Chief of Staff holding a full General or equivalent rank;
  • Person designated as Chairman of the Legislative Council of a State;
  • Person designated as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of any State in India;
  • Person designated as Chief Justice of a High Court;
  • Person designated as a High Court Judge;
  • Person designated as Army Commander or Vice-Chief of Army Staff and equivalent in other services;
  • Foreign dignitary on a State visit;
  • Person designated as Chief Secretary to a State Government within concerned State;
  • Person designated as Secretary to the Government of India;
  • Person designated as Secretary, Council of States;
  • Person designated as Secretary, House of People;
  • Person designated as a Member of Legislative Assembly of a State in the state premises, with identity proof.
  • Person designated as a Member of Legislative Council in the borders of their respective State, with identity proof.
  • Awardees of the following recognition having adequate identity proof:
  • Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra,
  • Maha Vir Chakra, Kirti Chakra,
  • Vir Chakra,
  • Shaurya Chakra

Any vehicle with the above persons shall be exempted from payment of toll tax.

Are there any other vehicles that are exempted from payment of road /toll taxes?

The following list of vehicles shall also be exempted from payment of toll tax:

  • Vehicle with a passenger who is from the Ministry of Defence including people eligible for toll exemption based on the provisions of the Indian Toll (Army and Air Force) Act, 1901 and laws including the Navy;
  • Central and State armed forces in uniform inclusive of Paramilitary forces and police;
  • An executive Magistrate;
  • Vehicle under the fire-fighting Department or organization;
  • Vehicle under the National Highways Authority of India;
  • Vehicle under any other Government agency or organization for purposes of the survey, inspection, operation or construction and maintenance of national highways;
  • Vehicle used as an ambulance;
  • Vehicle used as a funeral van.
