Amritsar RTO functions under the provisions of section 213 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The RTO Office has mainly been established for the implementation of the provisions laid under Motor Vehicles Act,1988, Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act,1924(Amended 1993)and the rules outlined under these two Acts.
The Amritsar RTO comes under Transport Department of Punjab and is headed by the Transport Commissioner.
A car insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Amritsar RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
