No Claim Bonus in Health Insurance

What is a No Claim Bonus (NCB) in Health Insurance?

No claim bonus (NCB) is a reward given by the insurer to policyholders for not making any claims during the policy period. It is also called a discount on premiums. This bonus can be accumulated over successive years and can help reduce the health insurance premium when you renew your policy. In this blog post, we will discuss everything you need to know about NCB in health insurance.

Types of No Claim Bonus in Health Insurance

There are two types of No Claim Bonus in Health Insurance

  • Cumulative Bonus

A cumulative bonus is an added benefit in your medical insurance policy that increases the sum assured by a certain percentage for every year you don't make a claim. For instance, if your cumulative bonus is 10% and you've had your policy for 4 years without making any claims, your sum assured will be increased by 40%. This cumulative bonus is usually capped at 50% and resets to 0% if you do make a claim in a year.

  • Discount on Premium

If you have a health insurance policy, you may be eligible for a discount on your premium if you have not made any claims during the policy period. This discount is called the No Claim Bonus (NCB).

NCB is a great way to save on your health insurance premium. If you have not made any claims during the policy period, you may be eligible for a discount of up to 50% on your premium. This means that you can save hundreds of dollars on your health insurance premium each year.

How Does No Claim Bonus Work?

The concept of NCB is similar to that of a loyalty program where customers are rewarded for their loyalty. Just like how banks offer rewards points, air miles, or cashback to credit card holders who spend regularly, health insurers offer NCB to policyholders who don't make any claims. This is because such policyholders pose a lower risk to the insurer and are less likely to file for insurance claims.

NCB is usually offered at the renewal of the health insurance policy. The size of the discount or increase in the sum assured depends on the number of years for which you have not made any claims. For instance, if you have not made any claim during the first year of your policy, you may get a 10% discount on the premium at renewal. This discount will increase to 20% in the second year and so on. In some cases, insurers also offer a cumulative bonus, wherein the benefits accumulate over successive years.

Benefits of NCB in Health Insurance

There are many benefits of the No Claim Bonus (NCB) in Health Insurance. Firstly, it helps you save on your premium as insurers offer a discount for every year you don't make a claim. This discount can be as high as 50% and accumulates each year, making your policy much cheaper in the long run. Secondly, it ensures that you are not left out of pocket if you do have to make a claim, as you will still receive the full value of your cover. Finally, NCB gives you peace of mind knowing that you are fully covered should anything happen to you or your family.

NCB for Individual and Family Floater Plans

The NCB can be accumulated over successive policy years and can be used to get a discount on the premium of a new policy or to enhance the coverage of an existing policy.

For individual and family floater plans, the NCB can be availed by all members of the family who are covered under the plan. The amount of NCB will depend on the number of years for which no claims have been made and the sum assured under the policy.

Is No Claim Bonus Available in all Health Insurance Plans in India?

In India, NCB is not available in all health insurance plans. There are some insurance companies that offer NCB as an incentive for policyholders to maintain good health and avoid making claims. However, there are also some companies that do not offer NCB.
