TWO WHEELER INSURANCE

Two Wheeler RC Meaning, Types, Importance & How to Apply Online

Shashi Kumar 20 January 2026

While driving on roads with your bike, if your driving licence is important, then your Registration Certificate (RC) is also equally important. This document acts as proof that your bike is registered with the government and is legally allowed on the road. Also, without an RC, you are unable to purchase a valid bike insurance policy.

Bike Registration Certificate (RC)

To further understand what RC is for bikes, the guide below explains it in depth, including why it matters, the types available, and how to get one both online and offline.

What Exactly is a Bike RC?

The RC full form in bike, which stands for Registration Certificate, is an important document issued by the Regional Transport Office as proof that the two-wheeler is owned by you. Earlier, it used to come in the form of a book, but it has now been replaced by a smart card.

Since the date of issuance, this document remains valid for 15 years and contains details such as the registration number, engine number, date of registration, chassis number, vehicle type, and colour, among others.

Different Types of Bike RC

After seeing the RC meaning in bikes, it is important to note that you can receive two types of RC for your two-wheelers. This includes:

  • Temporary Registration Certificate

  • When you buy a new bike, the dealer gives you a temporary registration number, and this temporary RC is valid for one month only. You must get a permanent RC within this time to drive legally on Indian roads.

  • Permanent Registration Certificate

  • The permanent RC is the official and long-term registration provided by the authorised Regional Transport Office (RTO). It shows your bike’s registration number, which must be displayed on the bike’s number plate. You also need the permanent RC to purchase bike insurance.

Note: Upon expiry of the RC after 15 years, it can be renewed again for five years. This renewal is done only after RTO officials examine the vehicle and declare that it is in roadworthy condition.

Why Having a Bike RC Book is Important?

Wondering what the need is behind a bike RC? Here are several reasons to have a valid RC:

  • The RC book or card links you to your bike since it has your name and address, proving you own the vehicle.

  • The information is stored on an RFID chip, making it hard to fake or copy the smartcard.

  • According to Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, you must carry the RC book to drive legally.

  • Riding a bike without a valid Registration Certificate (RC) is an offence under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 punishable with a fine of ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for the first offence and up to ₹10,000 or imprisonment of up to 1 year for subsequent offences

  • The police can penalise or even seize your bike if you don’t have a valid RC.

  • If you make any big changes to your bike, the updated RC will show that these changes are legally approved.

  • For bike insurance, having the RC book is essential, and without it, buying insurance or making claims becomes difficult.

  • The RC (Registration Certificate) has important details such as chassis number, engine number, registration date, etc., which help trace your bike’s history and are useful when you sell your bike or during police checks.

How to Apply for a Bike RC Book?

There are two means to apply for a bike RC, which are both online and offline. Here’s how it goes:

1. Apply for a Bike RC Book Online

  • Most government work is now online, so you can register your bike easily, quickly and at home itself on the Vahan portal.

  • You can also apply for related services like a fitness certificate, ownership transfer, or RC renewal online.

  • If you lose your RC, you can apply for a duplicate RC through the same online portal.

2. Apply for a Bike RC Book Offline

  • Visit your nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO).

  • Fill out Form 20 with details like your address, PAN number, bike engine and chassis details.

  • Submit required documents such as Form 21 (sales certificate), Form 22 (roadworthiness certificate), PAN card, address proof, insurance, and if applicable, Form 34 for loan details.

  • Pay the registration fees and get the receipt, after which your bike may be inspected by the RTO official.

  • After processing, your RC will be generated and sent to your registered address.

  • Some motor dealers with an RTO trade certificate can handle the registration process for you, saving you a trip.

3. RC for Used or Second-Hand Bikes

  • When you buy a used bike, you must get the ownership transferred to your name, as transferring ownership makes you the legal owner with all rights.

  • If the owner passes away, the bike must be legally transferred to the heir, but the owner’s family needs to submit specific documents for this transfer.

  • You can complete the ownership transfer and get a new RC online or offline.

Conclusion

Thus, a bike RC is a crucial document that gives both your two-wheeler and you an identity. Whether you buy a new or used bike, getting and maintaining a valid RC keeps you protected from legal issues and helps in a smooth ownership transfer. You will not have to worry about fines, vehicle seizure, or purchasing bike insurance with an RC.

After getting your RC, stay financially protected with a bike insurance policy. Browse through a wide list of policies from top bike insurance companies, and purchase a policy securely after comparing premiums and benefits across all.
