Check Engine Light: Causes and What It Means

Shamshuddin S 09 June 2025

The engine check light is one of the most important indicators. It deals with the performance of the engine and other components and systems related to it. Taking care of a car engine is akin to taking care of our heart.

check engine light

The check engine light is a smart heads-up for us to check whether it's a serious issue or a false alarm. Generally, when you turn on your car, all standard safety lights show up and few of them blink and turn off, but if your engine light is still blinking for minutes, you don’t need to scratch your head or raise your eyebrow. We got you covered with this write-up.

What Does Check Engine Light Mean?

In automobile taxonomy, the "Check Engine Light" (CEL) -also known as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) - is part of a vehicle's On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system, which monitors the engine and emission systems. The Check Engine Light signals that the vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) has detected a problem. If an issue is found, the warning light will activate in one of two ways:

1. Steady Check Engine Light

A steady check engine light usually indicates a non-urgent issue such as a loose fuel cap, faulty sensor, or minor emission problem. The vehicle is generally safe to drive for the short term, but it’s important to diagnose and fix the issue soon to avoid reduced fuel efficiency or future damage.

2. Blinking Check Engine Light

In contrast, a blinking check engine light signifies a serious problem, often an engine misfire-that can damage the catalytic converter if the vehicle continues to run. It’s best to stop driving immediately and seek professional help, as continued operation could lead to costly repairs.

Reasons Why Car Check Engine Light Comes On

Below are the common reasons why the check engine light comes on:

  • Loose or Faulty Fuel Cap

A loose, cracked, or missing fuel cap can cause fuel vapours to leak, triggering the CEL.

  • Faulty Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor)

This sensor monitors unburned oxygen in the exhaust. A malfunction affects fuel efficiency and emissions.

  • Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter

If it's clogged or damaged, it impacts exhaust flow and emissions, causing the CEL to turn on.

  • Bad Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

This sensor controls the air-to-fuel ratio. If faulty, it can lead to poor performance or stalling.

  • Worn Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils

Misfiring spark plugs or coils affect engine combustion and trigger the warning light.

  • Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve

A clogged or stuck EGR valve can cause rough idling or poor acceleration, leading to a CEL.

  • Issues with Engine Sensors or Wiring

Problems with sensors like the crankshaft or camshaft position sensors, or damaged wiring, can also cause the light to appear.

What to do if the Check Engine Light Turns on?

If the Check engine light turns on it can generally mean a few of the common issues such as engine oil replacement, coolant issues, electrical malfunction or many more reasons. One thing you can do is turn off the engine and restart the car again. If the check engine light still shows up it is wise to call a mechanic or take your vehicle to the service center.

What happens if I ignore my check engine light?

There are three scenarios in case you ignore your check engine light indicator:

Scenario 1

You jump in your car during the mornings, fasten your seat belt, check the handbrake, turn on the car and then the air conditioner. Put on some music or have a call in the car during your office and come back. Amidst all this, the car journey will be smooth and some days or weeks ahead in time, there will be a moment where your car malfunctions and you are stranded in the middle of your route.

Scenario 2

You are driving as usual, the music is perfect. The traffic is hectic but manageable. Your car gives you a hint of malfunction and stops working the second or third day. You would think you saw it coming but not this soon and you get it repaired.

Scenario 3

If you check the engine car light blinking over an extended period, you take your car right away to the service centre or call a mechanic to check by. The issue is fixed and your rides will be as smooth as ever.

How to Turn off the Check Engine Light

Here are several ways to turn off the check engine light, depending on the cause:

1. Fix the Underlying Problem

Best method: Once the issue is diagnosed and fixed (e.g., replacing a faulty sensor, or tightening the fuel cap), the light usually turns off automatically after a few drive cycles.

2. Tighten or Replace the Fuel Cap

A loose or damaged fuel cap is a common cause. Tighten it securely or replace it if cracked. Drive for a day or two to see if the light turns off.

3. Let It Go Through Drive Cycles

If the issue is minor and self-corrected (like moisture on a sensor), the ECU may turn the light off after 3–5 driving cycles.

Final Words

The check engine light is one of the car’s integrated electronic abnormality flagging systems. It is designed to keep you and your car safe- forming an important checkpoint. Regular servicing of your car is very essential for the car’s engine health and performance. In case you are worried about your engine and engine check light indicator, you can consider an engine protection cover while buying your four-wheeler insurance to be extra safe and extra guaranteed.
