Bharat NCAP Ratings for Cars: Everything You Need to Know

Smit Shah 24 June 2026

Bharat NCAP is India's official vehicle safety assessment programme that evaluates passenger vehicles through standardized crash tests and safety assessments. The programme assigns safety ratings from 1 to 5 stars based on Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, and Safety Assist Technologies. Bharat NCAP ratings help car buyers compare vehicle safety standards and make informed purchasing decisions before buying a car.

Buying a car today is not just about mileage, features, or price. Safety has become one of the most important factors for Indian car buyers, and Bharat NCAP helps make that decision easier. Bharat NCAP (Bharat New Car Assessment Programme) is India's official car crash testing and safety rating system that evaluates how well a vehicle can protect its occupants during an accident.

What is Bharat NCAP?

Bharat NCAP (Bharat New Car Assessment Programme) is India's official vehicle safety rating programme launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in October 2023. It evaluates the crashworthiness and safety performance of passenger vehicles sold in India through standardised crash tests.

The programme assesses how well a vehicle protects adult and child occupants during accidents and assigns safety ratings ranging from 1 to 5 stars. Bharat NCAP aims to improve road safety, encourage manufacturers to build safer cars, and help consumers make informed car-buying decisions.

Importance of Bharat NCAP Ratings

Bharat NCAP ratings help car buyers understand how safe a vehicle is before making a purchase. These ratings provide a standard benchmark for comparing the safety performance of different cars and encourage manufacturers to build safer vehicles for Indian roads.

  • Creates Safety Awareness: Helps buyers understand the importance of vehicle safety and crash protection.

  • Supports Better Buying Decisions: Enables consumers to compare cars based on safety ratings rather than only price, features, or mileage.

  • Encourages Safer Cars: Motivates manufacturers to improve vehicle design, structural strength, and safety technologies.

  • Standardised Safety Comparison: Provides a uniform rating system that makes it easier to compare the safety performance of different vehicles.

  • Improves Child and Occupant Safety: Evaluates adult and child occupant protection, helping families choose safer vehicles.

  • Promotes Advanced Safety Features: Encourages the inclusion of features such as ESC, six airbags, seatbelt reminders, and other safety assist technologies.

  • Contributes to Road Safety: Safer vehicles can help reduce the severity of injuries and fatalities during road accidents.

  • Builds Consumer Confidence: Official crash-test ratings give buyers greater confidence in a vehicle's safety performance.

How Bharat NCAP Works?

Bharat NCAP follows a structured process to evaluate the safety performance of passenger vehicles. The programme assesses how well a car can protect occupants during a crash and assigns safety ratings based on its performance.

Step 1: Vehicle Nomination by Manufacturers

Automobile manufacturers voluntarily nominate their vehicles for Bharat NCAP testing. Passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 tonnes are eligible for evaluation.

Step 2: Selection of Test Vehicles

Bharat NCAP selects vehicles from the nominated variants for testing. Usually, the base variant or the variant identified by the manufacturer is chosen for evaluation.

Step 3: Crash Testing

The selected vehicle undergoes various crash tests, including frontal offset, side impact, and side pole impact tests. These tests simulate real-world accident scenarios to assess occupant protection.

Step 4: Safety Feature Assessment

Apart from crash performance, Bharat NCAP evaluates safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), seat belt reminders, airbags, pedestrian protection systems, and other safety assist technologies.

Step 5: Occupant Protection Evaluation

The programme measures Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP) using crash test dummies and safety assessment criteria.

Step 6: Score Calculation

The scores obtained in different tests and safety assessments are compiled to determine the vehicle's overall safety performance.

Step 7: Star Rating Assignment

Based on the final scores, the vehicle receives a Bharat NCAP safety rating ranging from 1 star to 5 stars, with 5 stars representing the highest level of safety.

Step 8: Publication of Results

The official crash test results, safety scores, and star ratings are published on the Bharat NCAP website, allowing buyers to compare and evaluate vehicle safety before purchase.

Bharat NCAP Crash Test Procedure

Bharat NCAP evaluates a vehicle's crashworthiness through a series of standardized tests that simulate real-world accident conditions. These tests assess how effectively a vehicle protects its occupants and maintains structural integrity during a collision.

1. Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier (ODB) Test

In this test, the vehicle is driven into a deformable barrier at a speed of 64 km/hr with 40% of the front portion of the vehicle making contact with the barrier. The test evaluates:

  • Protection offered to the driver and front passenger

  • Structural stability of the passenger compartment

  • Risk of injuries to the head, chest, legs, and knees

  • Performance of airbags and seatbelts

2. Side Impact (MDB) Test

The side impact test simulates a collision where another vehicle strikes the side of the tested vehicle. A movable deformable barrier impacts the vehicle at 50 km/hr to assess:

  • Protection for occupants during side collisions

  • Strength of the side structure and doors

  • Head, chest, abdomen, and pelvic protection

  • Effectiveness of side airbags and safety systems

3. Side Pole Impact Test

This test evaluates a vehicle's protection when it collides sideways with a fixed object such as a pole or tree. The vehicle is propelled sideways into a rigid pole at 29 km/hr. It primarily measures:

  • Head and chest protection

  • Side curtain airbag performance

  • Occupant injury risks in severe side impacts

4. Child Occupant Protection Assessment

Bharat NCAP also evaluates the safety of child passengers using child restraint systems and crash test dummies. The assessment checks:

  • Effectiveness of child seat installation

  • ISOFIX anchorages

  • Protection provided to child occupants during crashes

5. Safety Assist Technology Evaluation

Apart from crash tests, Bharat NCAP assesses important safety technologies such as:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

  • Seatbelt reminders

  • Pedestrian protection systems

  • Side head protection systems

  • Other active safety features

How Does Bharat NCAP Evaluate Car Safety?

Bharat NCAP evaluates vehicles using three major parameters:

Parameter What It Evaluates
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) Safety of driver and adult passengers during crashes
Child Occupant Protection (COP) Protection offered to child occupants using child restraint systems
Safety Assist Technologies (SAT) Features such as ESC, seatbelt reminders, pedestrian protection, and side head protection

Bharat NCAP Star Rating System

Star Rating Safety Performance
5-Star Highest level of occupant protection and safety performance under Bharat NCAP testing.
4-Star Strong occupant protection with good crash test performance.
3-Star Adequate occupant protection and satisfactory safety performance.
2-Star Lower level of occupant protection compared to higher-rated vehicles.
1-Star Limited occupant protection under Bharat NCAP evaluation.

Additional Note: The final star rating is determined based on a vehicle's performance in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), and Safety Assist Technology evaluations.
